AusIMM: March tech talk: The Gonneville Nickel – Copper – PGE project:  A new green metals project in WA

  • Mercure Sanctuary Golf Resort 100 Old Coast Road Pelican Point, WA, 6230 Australia (map)

On Friday 13th March 2020, just before Covid locked down much of the country, Chalice Mining drilled the first hole on a property Northeast of Perth, discovering a new PGE-Ni-Cu deposit on cleared farmland to the West of Toodyay. Three years later, efforts following that first discovery has led to a resource that is over 500 million tonnes of ore containing 16 million ounces of PGE’s, almost 0.9 million tonnes of nickel, and just over half a million tonnes of copper amongst other metals. A scoping study on the resource was released in 2023, and the project is currently engaged in a pre-feasibility study amongst a challenging and changing metal price environment.

This talk will describe the lead-up to the discovery of the deposit, the geology and development of the project, covering the technical aspects of the project as well as the approach taken by Chalice to realising the potential of this world class green metals resource.

Mike Nelson - General Manager - Project Development, Chalice Mining
Matt Demmer - Lead Geologist, Chalice Mining
